The increased demand on reliable design methods for protective structures has resulted in the Netherlands in preparing a set of design guidelines for revetments of the sea-, and river-dikes, and for bank protection. These guidelines are intended for technicians and organizations directly involved in the design and management of protective structures. In this report a brief review on general design philosophy, different hydraulic and geotechnical aspects and design criteria for various types of revetments is given. The stability criteria based on small and large scale tests are formulated for the following systems: rip-rap, concrete units, asphalt and grass-mats. Developments for some other systems are also briefly mentioned.

This guide deals with the realisation and maintenance process for sea and lake dikes, dams, separation embankments and compartment dikes, in so far as they are primary flood defences. This guide is part of a coherent series of guides on flood defence (see table 1.1) and builds on the general TAW memorandum Gronslagen voor Waterkeren (Fundamentals on water defences) shortened to Fundamentals in this publication. This guide provides recommendations for the management of the dike or dam and the direct vicinity that enables the optimum use of the various values and functions that the dike or dam can have, with unconditional observance of the preconditions that apply to the water retaining function.
