The aim of these studies were to analyse the extension of the area of influence of a low crested structure on the surrounding soft bottoms and on their infaunal assemblages. For this purpose, a new sampling design allowing to collect samples at a successive distance from the low crested structure have been adopted by the different teams, in agreement withthe particular characteristics of each study site

This book, written primarily for decision-makers in the various government agencies concerned with the management of the estuary, describes the Ems-Dollard ecosystem and the forces operating on the ecosystem. The book contains the results of the BOEDE project, a multi-disciplinary investigation into the structure and function of an estuarine ecosystem which is subject to considerable stress as a result of the discharge of organic wastes from the potato-processing industry. The first two chapters describe the research structure and the scientific approach underlying the investigation. Chapter 3 deals with the hydrography of the area and provides an introduction to the biology of the system. In chapter 4 an overview of the behaviour of nutrients is given, as well as a description of the oxygen cycle. Chapters 5-7 describe the main biological components and the processes regulating them: planktonic and benthic primary production, zoobenthos, zooplankton, nekton and aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Chapter 8 is devoted to dead organic material (detritus), its composition and mineralization. Chapter 9 considers the entire system by comparing average biomasses and carbon fluxes. In chapter 10 simulation models are presented which describe the dynamic behaviour of the system. A general description of the modelling procedure as weIl as a number of results are given. The final chapter examines the role of man-made stresses in the Ems-Dollard estuary, and the ways in which these stresses influence the ecosystem.

A description of Mangrove ecosystems. Especially the hydrological processes in these ecosystems are described. The rapport can be used as manual for studies in these Mangrove ecosystems as the rapport gives several points of attention for these studies. Furthermore the rapport gives several hints on how to analyze the data. Next to these hints and tips the rapport covers a case study of the Klong Ngao near Ranong, Thailand.
