The design of a highly accessible medical setting what is mixed with urban everyday life, and thus embedded in its context

This diploma thesis focuses on offering a design solution that provides new vision and form at the large urban void of the Former Civil Airport of Hellenikon.

The social-spatial and spatial-functional qualities of main squares in North-western Europe are being defined by a set of criteria. A design proposal shows how we can not only analyse, but also improve the situation with use of these criteria.

The project focuses on how to combine the current corridor development and the cultural & historic assets by means of the public space network, in order to counteract the fragmentation at the local level and meanwhile benefit the local inhabitants of western fringe of Xi’an City, supplementing the governmental city model.

A new urban plan for Amsterdam and Amsterdam North. A new marina that will work as a great catalyst for Amsterdam North. My own intervention is a hybrid building; hotel, dwelling, shopping, restaurant, cafe, offices.

It is a multi-scalar approach to transform the non-develop urban void into an integrative place linking the fragments, through a permeable network of public space considering landscape, slow local street and semi public space.

The hereby thesis research has been developed within the Graduation Studio “Energy Landscapes”. The Graduation Studio aimed to be a research-by-design investigation into the spatial implications of the energy issue. The objective was to guide thesis projects that could offer new sustainable energy landscapes, visualized in a combination of schemes, maps and designs .Rotterdam region was chosen, a method to understand how to analyse and design city’s public spaces as people gatherer was researched. In a second phase the energy issue came back, as a top layer, introducing a second methodology to analyse the city from an energy point of view. The target of this research was the design of a public space which could influence people energy awareness by making them participants through it by introducing the use of natural energy sources in public space design.

Mijn project sluit aan op een actuele trend waarin kansen gezien worden voor de omsloten tuin in de hedendaagse stad (=Stedelijke Patio). Het is een ruimtelijke verkenning van de mogelijkheden ervan in Rotterdam centrum. Letterlijk en figuurlijk is diep gegraven in de Rotterdamse bodem om betekenis te geven aan de patio. Als een kijkdoosje stelt de Stedelijke Patio het waterrijke Rotterdamse landschap tentoon. Een stukje stenige stadslaag wordt weggegraven en de ondergrond geactiveerd door middel van een gedetailleerde keuze van landschapsarchitectonische elementen, materialisatie en beplanting. Tegelijk springt de patio in op actuele beleidsplannen voor een extra (zichtbare)waterlaag en een kwalitatief groene openbare ruimte.

Public space should be a node for social integration (Jacobs, J. 1961/1969; Carmona, M. 2003). The proposed project will search for a new model for organization of its public spaces exploring possible functional and physical integration, towards forming a cohesive public space network, that is to say, a network to be able to support the new mix-use conditions at the CBD area in order to increase the competitiveness of the city. The project will analyze the public space network in Shenzhen. I choose its CBD area as a study area for further design task. The challenge is to find strategic spatial means for giving to the CBD the condition to become an attractive urban vital centre.

New city center does not developed as well as it was planned because of an ideal planning model from government planner. In my project, I try to recogonize the real princeples about how the center system grows according to historical center, then apply these principles to reconstruct the new city center in order to revitalise new town.

This graduation project focuses on improving the public space and pedestrian connections between the different neighbourhoods surrounding the station area of the Hague Moerwijk. In the present situation the station area of the Hague Moerwijk is not well accessible or visible from its surroundings and the existing qualities of the area are neglected. The area around this tertiary station of the Hague is well located within the city structure, but has insufficient connections to the network of public space and facilities surrounding the location. The project location is now a left over space between the several neighbourhoods around the station. However it could be transformed into a central space connecting the city and the neighbourhoods, as well as being an interesting living area in the Hague south west. To achieve the objectives for this graduation project, several literature has been reviewed and studies are done on the project location. Within this thesis the results of the research and the development of the design are described.

De regioboulevard is een visie voor de herontwikkeling van de snelweg A58 tot een stadsweg met daaraan gekoppeld een divers stedelijk programma. Zowel in de lengte van de boulevard als in de breedte worden zowel bestaand als toekomstig programma aan elkaar gekoppeld. Het downgraden van de snelweg tot stadsweg zorgt ervoor dat de stad die nu in twee delen in gespleten weer een geheel wordt. De stad Roosendaal wordt beter bereikbaar en het leefklimaat verbetert sterk. De regioboulevard is in de visie programmatisch en stedenbouwkundig uitgewerkt en laat zien wat verwacht kan worden bij uitvoering van deze ingrijpende verandering. Daarnaast gaat de scriptie in op diverse soorten perifere detailhandel waarvan er al enkele in de regio te vinden zijn en van invloed zijn op consumentengedrag in heel West-Brabant en dus Roosendaal.
