P5 Presentation (and poster) about the design of the masterplan and dwellings in the centre of Berlin. A design that was made after doing research about Modern Nomads.

This is an infill/parasite housing project. The site is the corner in a typical urban block of the city of Berlin. The urban position of the project was based on the idea that "A city must be read as a carpet of fragments, as a continuum sequence of SPATIAL and PROGRAMMATIC PATTERNS." My design proposal is for a new fragment of the patchwork city, that provide a narrative experience moving through a juxtaposition of spatial forms. The architectural position for the dwellings was based on the idea that the HOUSE must meet the events of dwelling, in a continuum sequence of changing SPATIAL and PROGRAMMATIC PATTERNS. In my work I tried to show how: Reading the space as a juxtaposition of spatial and programmatic patterns is a guide to organize the complexity of the city and to think about a house that embrace the diversity of the events in the narrative experience of dwelling.

This project implements architectural elements in the transit space between the public domain and the private domain. By creating a market space, the delicious domain is introduced, the place where meeting places occur by the implementation of architectural elements within the transit space and cultures can be shared.

Doel van dit ontwerp is om op een plek waar vrijheid een bijzondere betekenis heeft, een combinatie te maken van wonen, werken en een publieke beleving. Hierin is de ‘visual unprivate zone’ een afgebakend gebied, een zone waar interactie plaats vindt tussen het privé terrein en het publieke terrein, zó vormgegeven dat beide gebieden een hogere kwaliteit krijgen

The research on space in Japanese architecture resulted in a number of spatial characteristics. These were then used as starting points for the design of a housing block in Dutch context.

The contrast between the ideas of composing the traditional European city and that of the modern city presented by Corbusier, have always been about the shaping of public space. In the traditional city the facades of the buildings defines the boarders of the public space, thus becoming a series of voids in the urban tissue. Whereas the space in the modern city becomes a open-ended void with free standing objects as buildings. This design mediate between the two extremes, proposing an object where the public, semi public and private spaces are carved out. These spaces are linked with the adjacent buildings on one side, and creates holes on the other, which blurred out the harsh boarder and let the public domain extend into the building. This results in a gradient of courtyard that reflects the small scale ‘Berliner Höfe’ of Kreuzberg and the large open spaces of the Media spree. A new kind of continuous courtyard typology. The quality of the dwellings are also integrated into this scheme. Every dwelling is orientated on three courtyards. The dwellings integrate all daily functions of urban life namely, living ( leisure, eating) working and sleeping. Each activity is matched with one or more courtyards. Narrow dwelling in the form of L-shapes will give max connectivity to these courtyards. The occupant can decide which activity is of more importance than the other and extend it through partition of sliding doors.

The permanent inhabitants of the rural area of Sesia Valley are shrinking, and the living conditions that origin as an agricultural community has changed. Resulting in the dissolving of the living environment as a community, and the falling apart of the culture heritage and tradition of this rural area. Tourism and leisure are an important factor in Sesia Valley; the project deals with the seasonal fluctuations of the program (winter and summer). The valley has great potential in tourism and leisure but have to be seen positively, instead of dealing with the shrinking of the area as a problem. The design project deals with the shrinking problem, and proposes a site-specific design that will lead to an impulse for the rural area of Sesia Valley. The project is a development of a strategy and a good program, with a flexible circulation of this program that can produce a dynamic commune and a sustainable living environment. Resulting in a revalue of the surrounding area. This design is a modern interpretation of the traditional “Walser” house and living environment within the rural area of the valley and the chosen site.

Het huis als communicatiemiddel in de stedelijke plekken (urban rooms) van Varallo Sesia. || Dit afstudeerproject beslaat het ontwerp voor een ensemble aan de voet van de Sacro Monte in Varallo Sesia. In dit ensemble worden twee groepen samengebracht: de hardst groeiende groep inwoners, de ouderen, en de groep die een economische impuls kan geven aan de stad, de toeristen. De hoofdgedachte van het ontwerp is dat de ruimte tussen de gebouwen net zo zeer ontworpen moet zijn als de gebouwen zelf. Daarmee wordt aangesloten op de taal van de stad, om beide groepen zich thuis te laten voelen in het nieuwe ensemble.

Het ontwerp speelt in op de problematiek krimp. De ontwerplocatie ligt midden in een groot krimpgebied, namelijk Sesia Valley ten noorden van Milaan. De gekozen doelgroep speelt een grote rol in de oplossingsrichting wat gestuurd word door het thema in-between; Stad en land en publiek en privé.

De Italiaanse vallei Sesia heeft te maken met een krimpend inwonersaantal, door onder andere de trek naar de steden en vergrijzing. Als gevolg hiervan komen publieke voorzieningen te vervallen en panden leeg te staan. In dit ontwerp wordt hier op ingespeeld door een leegstaand ziekenhuis te transformeren tot een gemeenschappelijk wooncomplex gecombineerd met zorgvoorzieningen. Een deel van het gebouw is zo aangepakt dat het nu een publieke plek voor de inwoners van het dorpje Varallo is, maar tegelijkertijd ruimte laat voor bewoning of ander gebruik in de toekomst.

De stedelijke plekken van Varallo Sesia worden doorgetrokken over een locatie. Op deze locatie staat een door krimp leegstaand ziekenhuis die op deze manier nieuwe betekenis krijgt. Kunst word als kathalyserende factor gebruikt midden in deze locatie. Hierdoor worden bestaande krachten van Varallo Sesia verbonden maar ontstaat er ook een nieuw vertrekpunt voor kunst in Varallo.

De krimpsituatie in de Sesia Vallei in het noordwesten van Italië biedt nieuwe kansen voor het benutten van de kwaliteiten van het gebied. De verbinding van de berg en de rivier met de stad en de bewoners staat centraal. De relatie tussen het wonen en natuur is hierbij het uitgangspunt. The shrinking village in the Sesia valley in northwest Italy provides us with new opportunities to make use of the qualities of the area. The connection between the mountain and the river, with the city and its inhabitants. The relation between living and nature is the key to the project.

Dit onderzoeksrapport vormt een onderdeel van het afstudeerproject At Home in the City van de vakgroep Dwelling aan de faculteit Bouwkunde van de Technische Universiteit Delft . De resultaten van het onderzoek zullen worden gebruikt in het hierop volgende ontwerpproject waarin een (woningbouw) ontwerp zal worden gemaakt in de hoogstedelijke context van Berlijn. Dit onderzoek vormt de fundering van het ontwerpproject dat de komende periode verder ontwikkeld wordt en uiteindelijk zal resulteren in het afronden van de studie Bouwkunde.

Het ontwerp van een woongebouw op basis van een ontmoetingsconcept en een onderzoek naar de overgang tussen publiek en privé in woongebouwen.

De maatschappij wordt steeds gestressvoller, je thuis is de beste plek om tot rust te komen. Tijdens dit ontwerp is een onderzoek gedaan; OVER_GANGEN. Hierin wordt de overgang tussen het publieke en private domein (druk en rustig domein) onderzocht. De bevindingen zijn gebruikt bij het ontwerp voor een wooncomplex in het centrum van Berlijn. De woongebouwen grijpen om elkaar heen waardoor er hofjes ontstaan die met elkaar in verbinding staan welke een oase van rust creeeren in de metropool Berlijn. Elke woning is voorzien van verschillende rustplekken die een nauwe relatie hebben met een buitenruimte.

Vanwege een sterke toename van de globalisatie en individualisatie, ontstaat er een nieuwe levenstijl. Dat van de reiziger; de Moderne Nomade. Immer op pad, soms voor een korte tijd, soms voor een langere periode, soms gedwongen (vanwege bijv. financiele redenen) en soms ongedwongen (bijv. recreatief). In dit afstudeerwerkstuk wordt aan de hand van de resultaten van een onderzoek dieper ingegaan op de consequenties die deze nieuwe manier van leven op het wonen heeft. Dit heeft geresulteerd in het ontwerp van een woongebouw in Berlijn.

Dwelling project Tacheles, Berlin, Germany Theme Identity

Research and Design for a mixed used building in Berlin on the Tacheles site. The research focusses on the phenomenon of laboratory spaces: bottom up used superfluous (previously unused) space with a creative function. The design of the building mimics the characteristics of the urban conditions of these laboratory spaces. A generous amount os space is created to be colonized by the inhabitants of Berlin...

Onderzoek naar de vraag 'Welke ruimtelijke condities genereren collectiviteit op de route tussen de woning en de straat'. Aan de hand van 12 casestudies worden vergelijkingen gemaakt op basis van voor de onderzoeksvraag relevante statements gemaakt door architecten uit heden en verleden. Deze quotes zijn in een matrix uitgezet tegen de geanalyseerde projecten en gebruikt als toetsinginstrument om ze vergelijkbaar te maken. Besloten wordt met conclusies die met behulp van de matrix tot stand zijn gekomen. Deze kunnen dienen als tools voor het ontwerpen van woonensembles in stedelijke contexten.
