Belleville en vue(s)

The Transformation of the urban structure of Kumasi: KEJETIA INTERVENTIONS, giving public form to the Kumasi Central Market
Inter-Cultural Exchange
Developing an architectural proposal in Ghana as a Dutch architect requires a self-conscious and critical position regarding the obvious socioeconomic disparities between the two countries. To achieve an appropriate architecture, patronizing tendencies of western work should be avoided whilst a realistic perspective into the local building industry should be established. A sensible approach to the geography and climate are also essential. Ultimately, instead of attempting to make a ‘typical’ Ghanaian building the design attempts to emphasize the confluence of Western and African design culture.
Urban Acupuncture
In response to the plans to destroy and rebuild the market as a Western modeled shopping mall this design proposes an alternative solution for redevelopment. First a series of personal mappings and anthropological work by Gracia Clark and AbduhMalikh Simone identified what important patterns and systems are essential to the markets functionality as well as what structural deficiencies need urgent attention. Based on the research a strategy of ‘urban acupuncture’ is proposed to reach maximum gain with minimal intervention in the market. This subtle intervention is crucial, because informal and social networks are fundamental to the livelihoods of local traders as well as the general supply and distribution logistics that define the market. Furthermore, market traders survive on a daily wage, which is little above the poverty-line. This thesis thus opposes the dislocation of traders, prolonged disruption of the daily routine, or the wholesale formalization of this vivid and dynamic system, and rather seeks to implement a structure that can gradually be built without requiring total transformation.
Public Amenities
However, while certain positive aspect of the current market are identified, there are serious deficiencies that cause discomfort for traders as well as customers of the market. Bad sanitation, overcrowding, fire-hazard, and bad access, amongst other issues, are part of a daily routine that is far from ideal. Based on interviews, and participation in a daily trading routine, certain problems were identified, and a design brief formulated. The final structure contains an Internet cafe, offices for market officials, a medical and daycare center, a kayayoo (girls that carry groceries) rest-place, a fire- and security post, toilets, and a water storage and acces point. Whilst the design doesn’t attempt to solve all issues and deficiencies, it shows that alternative more delicate strategies can significantly improve life on the market.
Architectural Aesthetic
Although a very cautious strategy was used for the intervention, the proposal uses architecture as an organizational device to make the generic form of the market more legible. In order to create a strong architectural presence, the main structure is lifted above the ground floor and uses a strong pattern based on Kente cloth to create a contrasting aesthetic with the homogeneous roofscape of rusty corrugated steel roofing. Given that the design anticipates expansion, appropriation and modification a clear modular structure is implemented that has a formal resilience and will remain a legible as an integrated yet autonomous architecture on the Kejetia Market.

Herbestemming religieus erfgoed

"Architectural landscape in the British American Tobacco factory: Flora exhibition space in hall 12"
For the BAT (British American Tobacco factory) terrain to re-use and use the main valuable buildings as a source was a starting point, this approach depends in the cultural, historical, architectural and social value that the obsolete buildings have. Architectural values related to standardization, function and form, mostly the halls from the year 1921 till 1952 have an architectural value, because of the unity, clarity and precise construction linked with the industrial production. As a recognizable element, prefabricated concrete columns and beams as a repetition, express the clear way it was constructed and assembled.
The new flora exhibition space in "hall 12", is related to the biodiversity in the landscape that is predominant in Zevenaar. The flora exhibition space is a new function that can enhance the horticulture value, and can give a new identity to the people in Zevenaar. So the necessity of an architectural landscape considers the ecological approach and the relation to the context. It intend to recover aesthetically the spirit of a place, which lose the identity caused by the urban intervention.

The Intervention of the Faculty of Art at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi
The interesting thing about art is that it bonds people, no mather where you come from or who you are. Fore that reason and also because my own interest in art, I’ve tried to learn things about Kumasi via art. Especially crafts are an important heritage for Kumasi. Art is an instrument to express yourself, it’s good for the self-esteem of residents and students and also can create social cohesion. It’s important to conserve this. Not only to tell history, but also to stimulate the new generation and keep the talent.
One important way to do this is to improve the existing art school in Kumasi; the Faculty of Art at the KNUST Campus. The prob¬lem of the current accommodation is mainly the lack of space. The challenge is to improve this faculty at the current building plot. Therefore the objective is to make a proposal design for the restoration and renovation of this faculty. The enlargement of education space is mainly necessary for staff accommo¬dation, studio space, lecture rooms, art storage and place for symposia. In this way I try to contribute a little to preserve art and it’s benficial assets.
LET'S MEET EACH OTHER
The faculty is located in the Northern part of the KNUST Campus. A new entrance will be proposed, so that also residents of surroundings districts, like Ayigya, can visit the faculty and participate for instance painting workshops. At the current building site, there are hardly places to meet. However it could be an opportunity to create those places, where students and tutors can relax in the shadow or spend their lunch break. The current building ensemble exits of several longitudinal pavilions which function as classrooms. In the course of time this area has extended in the same typology. The atmosphere is pleasant and the ensemble appears like a small village. There is a little bit of green, but this could be increased. The concept is to take down some existing classroom pavilions, which have a low building quality. The renewal exits of new pavilions, which will be build in the same architectural typology as the existing ones, but in an innovated way. To shift them in a certain way, meetings places will be created. Only some large trees will cover these areas. When it’s to hot inside the classroom pavilions, lectures and presentations can be held outside now,
ADAPTION OF SPACE
Because of the water erosion in the area, the building site will be terraced. Terracing will decrease the speed of the water and therefore create water erosion control. The new landscape that will be constructed is the joining component that connects the old and the new pavilions. Because the levels of the landscape are all one step high, it’s also a place where you can sit on. As well some places can function as a podium where lectures can be held. When the landscape is in use, the outside space becomes suited to the needs of the students and tutors, but when it’s not in use, it’s just the green landscape itself. Therefore this new landscape can loan itself perfectly for the adaption of education space.
A POINT OF VIEW
From the board of deans there was the question to cluster the functions more. For that reason also a reorganization of the functions will take place. The workshops are grouped together now as one big family. Via a bridge this area will be entered. The five new workshop pavilions surround a large terrace on the first floor level. From here you can enter the pavilions on the first floor, but it’s also a communal area where larger events can be held or expositions can be organized. This place gives a great view over the rich vegetated campus area, in the direction of the district Ayigya.
