DelftCluster Railway transition zones & Switches: Factual report long-term measurements
For the Delft Cluster project “Railway Transition zones” extensive field-testing has been performed. Testing took place on the railway track Gouda-Goverwelle (GoGo) on a culvert and on a Switch. Many different parties were involved in the testing and numerous different types of tests were performed. Al the different tests ad up to a large amount of data supplied by different parties and thus supplied in different formats. This report is a part of a series of factual reports, which give a complete overview of al test performed and their results. All reports are written in the same format and tests are named in similar fashion. The reports also describe the structure of a database that contains all data. This database is supplied digitally along with the reports. The complete series of reports consists of:
A. Field survey. 1001069-000-GEO-0004 Factual report soil investigation
B. Short-term measurements May 2008. 1001069-000-GEO-0003 Factual report short term measurements 2008
C. Short-term measurements April/May 2009. 1001069-010-GEO-0004 Factual report short term measurements 2009
D. Long-term measurements. 1001069-000-GEO-0005 Factual report long-term measurements.
This report (A) gives a complete overview of all the long-term measurements and the results. The long-term measurements focus on levelling. In Chapter 2 and 3 all measurements are presented and discussed. To enable further studying of the data, the original data is available. Chapter 4 shows where the data can be found.

DelftCluster Railway transition zones and switches: Factual report fieldtest monitoring
For the Delft Cluster project ‘Railway transition zones and switches’, extensive field-testing has been carried out. At a location east of the railway station Gouda Goverwelle (GoGo) the behavior of a track and soil at a culvert and a switch are studied. This report is part of a series of reports describing all tests performed at the GoGo test site and their results. All reports are written in the same format and tests are named in similar fashion. The reports also describe the structure of a database that contains all data. This database is supplied digitally along with the reports.
The complete series of reports consists of:
A. Field survey. 1001069-000-GEO-0004 Factual report field survey
B. Short-term measurements May 2008. 1001069-000-GEO-0003 Factual short-term measurement 2008
C. Short-term measurements April/May 2009. 1001069-010-GEO-0004 Factual report short-term measurements 2009
D. Long-term measurements. 1001069-000-GEO-0005 Factual report long-term measurements.
This report (A) gives a complete overview of the field survey. The report starts with some information on the culvert and switch. Then, the following geotechnical test results are described:
- CPT.
- VSPT.
- Visual inspection.
- Ground Penetrating Radar.

Evaluatie resultaten Innotrack

DelftCluster Railway transition zones:
Factual report short term measurement 2008
This report gives an overview of the extensive short term measurements undertaken for the Delft Cluster project Railway transition zones. The objective of the project was to measure the response of the railway track and ground, at a transition zone' during the passage of regular service trains. Both Deltares and the University of Southampton performed measurements at the Gouda Goverwelle (GoGo) site. Both institutes have large amounts of measured data available for the project. Secondly, additional data is provided by Dutch railway operators. In order to make sure that data can be shared without problems it is essential that all data is properly documented. To ensure a problem free exchange of measurements and data, they are not only summarized in this report but they are given proper names as well. This way there will be less chance of misunderstandings between the two institutes when discussing measurement data.

Analysis of track and soil behaviour at transition zones: Case study near Gouda Goverwelle
The Dutch rail network is one of the busiest in the world. Structural, partly preventative, maintenance of the rail infrastructure is essential to ensure that such a busy network remains safe and free of faults. A substantial amount of position maintenance is currently necessary for the upkeep of the Dutch rail network and, in comparison with neighbouring countries, considerable wear and tear is apparent on the rails and rail joints. The soft subsoil provides a plausible explanation for this, particularly in the western part of The Netherlands. The consequences of this situation are relatively large amounts of position maintenance, especially on transitions between embankments and engineering structures, and a relatively large number position maintenance of related to faults, particularly where switches are located.
Delft Cluster investigates the impact of the dynamic behaviour of the subsurface on degradation and the associated position maintenance. The research mainly focuses on
specific components of the rail network, namely transition zones and switches. In the research plan ‘Impact of Dynamic Subsurface on Transitions and Switches’ dated 18 December 2006, the research was described in greater detail. Part of the research is to conduct field tests to analyze possible failure mechanisms in track and subsoil. A research site was selected near Gouda Goverwelle in the western part of the Netherlands. In 2008 and 2009 field measurements have been performed at a transition zone and at a switch.
The target of this report is the interpretation and conclusions from all field measurements at the Railway Transition Zone (RTZ) of a culvert near Gouda Goverwelle.
