Joosten, L.J.M. Simons, J.L. Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1976-04-28 Abstract The study on image data security is directed to the requirement for exclusive access to satellite imagery in the concept of the Agricultiiral Real Time Imaging Satellite System (ARTISS). The security assessment indicates that user survey requests are handled confidentially and it shows the access vulnerability of the transmission of image data to the user groundstation. To realize the security of this transmission two promising methods are available: i) Directional transmission using a directive spacecraft antenna. This is supported by an onboard jamming transmitter which causes a deterioration of the picture quality outside a trusted territory. ii) Crypto technique to realize with onboard enciphering of the image data and deciphering at the user groundstation. Implementation costs for directional transmission and crypto technique are 6 and 3 % of the ARTISS costs respectively. In case of a crypto technique a 20 % cost increase for operations is expected.
