The Impact of Facelifts on the Sales Performance in the Automotive Industry

In order to extend a cars lifecycle, car manufacturers upgrade cars with facelifts (a measure to counteract the natural sales decline in the second half of a products lifecycle).
It is unknown which measures (cosmetic or technological ones for example) within a facelift lead to a successful lifecycle extension. Having a limited budget, it needs to be found out which areas need to be touched on a facelift to achieve a positive impact on the sales figures, thus successfully extending the car’s lifecycle.
To do so a retrospective market research analysis was performed and a survey with 197 respondents to get information about their purchase decisions when buying a car.
Among other things it was found out that drivers of successful facelifts are exterior and interior design, safety relevant innovations and upgrade to engines, making them more efficient and emitting less CO2
