Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1972-10-10 Abstract The mission analysis concept for defining design loads is assessed and compared with the current design procedure based on Design Envelope Concepts. Although the Mission Analysis Concept permits design loads of equal probability of exceedance to be obtained for all components, this does not imply that a fixed failure probability for the aircraft as a whole can be obtained. It is argued that a rigorous application of the concept is unfeasible in practice. The suitability of a Mission Analysis in conjuction with Design Envelope Procedures is described.
