Contributor Stouten, P. (mentor) Westrik, J. (mentor) Faculty Architecture and The Built Environment Department Urbanism Programme Urban regeneration Date 2012-07-03 Abstract Fostering a sustainable community means creating a livable area in which the current residents are able to obtain housing opportunities to their socio-economic characteristics in their own neighborhood, even if these characteristics change (Stouten, 2010). This project elaborates the relation of physical interventions and the criteria’s for fostering a sustainable community within current urban regeneration strategies. The physical interventions have to help for enhancement of livability of the area and socio-economic position of the residents in the developing areas. The interventions should allow local communities to maintain their existing social networks and communities, and improve their sense of belonging to their environment. There might also be issues, which are not to be solved by physical interventions, but they are also important for sustainable regeneration of an area. The final product of this project is an urban regeneration strategy and a design proposal for one of the pre-war areas in Rotterdam.
