The objective of this research is to find which controller structure is best suited for controlling a mixed traffic ITT system. In doing so, performance differences will be reviewed to gain insight into the effect of control structures and a simulation model will be developed that is able to simulate different controllers and their inherently different approach to the optimization of transport planning; the integrated optimization of dispatching, routing and scheduling. In order to develop a model that is representative of a real-world ITT system, a case study will be done on the Container Exchange Route in the Port of Rotterdam. The gained insights can be used to formulate an advice on the transition from human driven to autonomous vehicles in transport systems with respect to their controllers, and might elaborate on the knowledge related to collaborative planning for ITT, expanding upon the performance influence of different control approaches in this regard.
