Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1988-07-22 Abstract A description is given of TULIPS - a method for Transonic Unsteady Lifting Inviscid Potential-flow Simulation. The Mathematical formulation and the numerical approach are presented for flow about oscillating airfoils. TULIPS is based on the numerical integration of the unsteady full-potential equation in generalized coordinates. The equation is discretized in space by a fully conservative finite difference scheme employing mass-flux splitting to maintain stability in the supersonic flow region. The boundary condition on the airfoil is carefully modelled by using a boundary-conforming C-type grid, that can be adapted to the shape of the airfoil and its motion. At the outer boundary of this grid a numerical boundary condition is applied that simulates the radiation of energy out of the computational domain and towards infinity.
