(mentor) Metz, L. (mentor) Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Department Man-Machine Interaction Date 2009-11-23 Abstract With the development of 3G technology information is getting more and more accessible. While being very practical this availability of information can have adverse effects on people. The research shows that some people on their leisure time enjoy and value uncertainty. A literature and user research revealed that people with certain personality types were generally more welcoming to uncertainty. Therefore a location based application was implemented for the iPhone that allows users to create Points of Interest (Poi) on a map that they can share with other users. The users are allowed to see other Pois on the map of their iPhone but information about unvisited Pois is very limited. The central idea of Discovery is making places more interesting not by revealing more information, but by hiding information from the users. Discovery focuses on the experience that a place provides rather than the information of that place. Discovery is designed by confirming to the Apple guidelines for interface design for an intuitive use for the iPhone users. The application was also designed by recognizing that different people are motivated in different ways and thus aims to stimulate different personalities offering a wide range of emotions from a sense of achievement to exploration.
