Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences Department Transport & planning Date 2014-01-16 Abstract Driver behavior in China shows remarkable differences from that in western countries. In this study, six focus groups were organized to investigate Chinese drivers’ attitudes, expectations, intended actions, their preferences, and habits in different situations in urban areas. The outcomes show that there are important opportunities to improve driver behavior, leading to safer and more efficient traffic. Driver behavior–related simulation models have been developed for traffic plan, evaluation and design purpose. Most of these models consider relatively ideal driver behavior in western countries in the – for them common - traffic conditions. This study shows what modifications and calibration are needed to make such models valid for Chinese traffic.
