Evaluatie nutriënten monitoring in de winter in de Nederlandse: Trend, normtoetsing en monitoringstrategie

In de periode 1991-1998 zijn er, naast het reguliere monitoringprogramma (MWTL), additionele locaties bemonsterd voor opgelost anorganisch stikstof (DIN) en fosfaat (DIP) door Directie Noordzee. In deze nota wordt de vraag beantwoord of deze extra monsters nu ook meer informatie hebben gegeven. Meer specifiek zijn de vragen: is de trend in de bestaande gegevens duidelijker aantoonbaar wanneer er extra gegevens worden gebruikt en hoeveel monsters moeten worden geanalyseerd in de toekomst om een bepaalde verandering te kunnen aan tonen? In de bestaande gegevens is een significante dalende trend in de DIN (16%) en DIP (60%) concentratie, berekend bij een zoutgehalte van 30, aanwezig in de Nederlandse kustzone in de wintermaanden (december tot maart) in de periode 1985 - 1999. De dalende trend voor DIN is anders of niet significant wanneer de gegevens uit andere periodes worden vergeleken. De dalende trend in DIN en DIP verandert niet door meer monsters te analyseren dan in het huidige monitoringprogramma gedaan wordt. Wel wordt een trend met een paar procent nauwkeuriger aantoonbaar en de standaard deviatie kleiner naarmate er meer gegevens zijn. De concentratie DIN in de wintermaanden, bij een zoutgehalte van 30, ligt 3 maal boven de natuurlijke achtergrondwaarde in 1985 en tot 1999 blijft dit zo. Een ander beeld wordt voor de winter concentratie van DIP bij een zoutgehalte van 30 gevonden. In 1985 zijn deze nog 3,5 maal verhoogd ten opzichte van de natuurlijke achtergrond concentratie en in 1999 is de DIP concentratie in de Nederlandse kustzone nog 1,5 maal verhoogd ten opzichte van de achtergrond concentratie. Uit de relatie tussen het aantal monsters dat genomen moet worden om een bepaalde verandering (% reductie) te kunnen aan tonen in een toekomstig programma komt naar voren dat het nemen van extra monster boven het regulier monitoringprogramma vrijwel geen additionele informatie over een mogelijke verandering geeft. Te verwachten is dat in de toekomst de DIN concentratie sterker zal dalen dan de DIP concentratie in de Nederlandse kustzone daar de DIP concentratie reeds sterk gedaald is en de DIN concentratie nog op een relatief hoog niveau zit en het beleid zich sterk op de reductie van DIN richt. Uit de relatie komt naar voren dat 25-40 monsters, genomen in de winter maanden, voldoende zijn om een verandering van 15 tot 10% per jaar in de DIN en 35 tot 30% per jaar in de DIP concentratie bij een zoutgehalte van 30 aan te kunnen tonen. Geconcludeerd wordt dat het huidige monitoringprogramma (25-40 monsters) in de winter maanden voldoende is om een toekomstige verandering in de concentratie aan te kunnen tonen. ______________________________________________________ In the period 1991-1998 additional samples have been taken, beside the regular monitoring program for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) en phosphate (DIP) by the Directorate North Sea. In this report the question if these additional samples has gained more information is answered. More specific the questions are: is the trend in the existing data more precise when more data is used and how many samples must be taken in future to detect a certain change? In the existing data a significant reduction in the DIN (16%) and DIP (60%) concentration, calculated at a salinity of 30‰, is present in the Dutch coastal zone in the winter month's (December till March) in the period 1985 - 1999. The reduction in DIN is changing or is not significant when a comparison is made for other periods. In general, the decreasing trend in DIN and DIP over the period 1985-1999 does not change when more samples are analysed above the present monitoring program. The concentration of DIN in the winter month's, at a salinity of 30‰, is 3 times above the natural background concentration in 1985 and this does not change till 1999. Another picture is found for DIP at a salinity 30‰. In 1985 DIP is 3,5 times above the natural background concentration in the Dutch coastal zone and in 1999 this value decreased to 1,5 times. From the relation between the amount of samples that must be taken to detect a certain change (% reduction) in a future program it appears that the sampling of extra locations above the regular monitoring program nearly no additional information is gained about a possible change. It is to be expected that in future the concentration of DIN will decrease more than the DIP concentration because the DIP concentration decreased already strongly and the DIN concentration is still rather high and the objective is to decrease DIN in the near future. From the relation is appears that 25-40 samples, taken during the winter month's in the Dutch coastal zone, are sufficient to detect a change of 15-10% per year in the DIN concentration and 35-30% per year in the DIP concentration at a salinity of 30‰. So, it is concluded that the present monitoring program in the winter month's in the Dutch coastal zone is sufficient to detect possible trends.
