The aim of the research described in this report is to explore relevant phase equilibria for a new process for the production of sodium chloride. In chapter 1, the new process is described in detail. Sodium chloride is produced by solventing-out from brine, after adding of a miscible organic solvent to the brine. The miscible organic solvent is recovered by means of (supercritical) extraction. Solventing-out of sodium chloride from brine by means of a miscible organic solvent is the subject of chapter 2. The solubility of salt in water, when a miscible organic solvent is added, is investigated. The measurements are described by means of 2 models. At the end of chapter 2 a model system is selected: [ethane-water-isopropylamine]. Chapter 3 is built up of 2 parts. The first part discusses Cailletet measurements of (vapour+liquid) equilibria of the system. [(1-x) C2H6+ x isopropylamine]. It is demonstrated that an acceptable description of these equilibria by means of the Peng-Robinson equation of state is possible. In the second part of chapter 3 the development of an apparatus to measure phase equilibria according to the analytical method is described. This apparatus is tested with the binary system [(1-x) C2H6+ x isopropylamine]. Some introductory measurements (at (liquid+liquid) equilibria of the system [(1-x-y) C2H6+ x H2O + y isopropylamine] are discussed. Finally, in chapter 4, besides conclusions, recommendations are given concerning future experiments necessary to provide a better knowledge of the phenomena described in chapters 2 and 3. Necessary improvements on the apparatus are also mentioned.
