Disposable packaging waste is a significant environmental challenge. Reusable packaging offers a potential solution by keeping materials in circulation for a longer period, therefore reducing overall waste.

This project explores the feasibility of reusable packaging for the soft fruit sector, which faces unique challenges due to the delicate nature of the fruits and their high susceptibility to spoilage. Research indicated that strawberries are a suitable candidate for reusable packaging, as they can be locally sourced and they are in high demand.

The primary goal of the study is to design a packaging that can be reused beyond its environmental break-even point while meeting the essential requirements of protecting the fruit. A strong focus is also placed on user experience, investigating how the packaging can be made desirable compared to disposable alternatives and how its continued use can be encouraged.

Extensive research on material properties and user preferences was conducted through literature reviews and interviews with experts to understand the context and develop a list of requirements. A Morphological Chart supported concept generation, followed by a user test for concept selection. Finally, an ergonomics test combined with an evaluation using Pugh’s Scoring Matrix guided the development of the final concept: a square, nestable container with a transparent lid.

The design optimizes ease of handling, aesthetic appeal, and logistical efficiency while balancing user needs, cost, and durability to ensure the packaging can be reused well beyond its break-even point. ...
