The Netherlands has one of the densest road networks with over 140,000 km of roadways. Fatigue cracking is an important distress in flexible pavements. This form of distress results from the application of repeated traffic loading which causes failure. Fatigue cracking assessment on various base layer asphalt mixtures including reclaimed asphalt pavement materials and recycling agents has been addressed in this research work. This research work aims to develop a method for quantifying and assessing this fatigue characterization including the self-healing mechanism of asphalt mixtures using Visco Elastic Continuum Damage Theory. The self-healing in asphalt mixtures was assessed by incorporating group-rest healing periods in a self-developed laboratory testing method. The reliable self-healing models for asphalt mixtures with recycled asphalt materials and recycling agents based on temperature, damage state, and rest periods were predicted using the damage characteristics curve (C-S). Bottom-up cracking in base layer asphalt mixtures was modeled and studied using finite element modeling software FlexPAVE based on the Visco-Elastic Continuum Damage theory. A vivid assessment of mixtures for fatigue and healing characterization is discussed in this research work.

This research work is interrelated with an ongoing project, which aims at developing a protocol to determine the shift factors for the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures to correct healing and aging. The project runs under the umbrella of Knowledge-based Pavement Engineering (KPE), a joint program among Rijkswaterstaat, TNO, and TU Delft. Dura Vermeer is contributing partner to this MSc graduation research work as well.

In de wegenbouw is duurzaamheid een belangrijk speerpunt. Daarom wordt er gezocht naar nieuwe bindmiddelen en modificaties om duurzame oplossingen te vinden voor de alsmaar groeiende verkeersstromen. Met de introductie van asfalt met epoxygemodificeerde bitumen wordt een grote stap gezet in het realiseren van robuuste wegen met een langere levensduur. Door de jaren heen is asfalt met epoxybitumen wereldwijd toegepast als een hoogwaardig verhardingsmateriaal met een lange levensduur, vooral als wegdek op stalen brugdekken. In Nieuw-Zeeland wordt sinds 2007 asfalt met epoxybitumen als deklaag gebruikt. Om tot een balans te komen tussen kosten en prestaties wordt daar sinds 2012 gekozen voor een mengvorm van epoxybitumen met gewone bitumen. Inmiddels ligt er al een miljoen vierkante meter ZOAB met epoxygemodificeerde bitumen. In 2017 is door de TU Delft, provincie Noord-Holland en Dura Vermeer het initiatief genomen om epoxygemodificeerde bitumen in Nederland te introduceren. Aan de TU Delft zijn vanaf 2018 twee PhD’s gestart om epoxygemodificeerde bitumen voor de Nederlandse situatie te onderzoeken. De laboratoriumonderzoeken bij de TU Delft en Dura Vermeer wijzen uit dat de epoxygemodificeerde mengsels in het algemeen betere eigenschappen hebben dan mengsels met standaard bitumen. Asfalt met epoxygemodificeerde bitumen gaat naar verwachting veel langer mee dan de huidige asfaltmengsels. De langere levensduur leidt tot een lagere milieubelasting. De meerkosten ervan zijn aanzienlijk maar vanwege de langere levensduur zijn de life cycle costs lager. Er is minder hinder voor het verkeer omdat de weg minder vaak hoeft te worden voorzien van een nieuwe asfaltlaag. En tenslotte, als het dan uiteindelijk toch versleten is, kan het goed worden hergebruikt. Het is echter moeilijk om de langere levensduur te kwantificeren, hier is geen algemeen geaccepteerde meetmethode voor. Om de praktijkeigenschappen te monitoren, zijn direct al diverse proefvakken aangelegd. De betere hechting, de betere prestatie na veroudering (zoals vorst-dooi cycli) en de verbeterde weerstand tegen rafeling kunnen duiden op een langere levensduur. Epoxy modification of bitumen leads to improved binder properties e.g. good fatigue performance, improved adhesion to mineral aggregates and excellent aging resistance. It already exists over 50 years and since then it has successfully been applied on many orthotropic steel bridge decks around the world. After an OECD research program on long life pavements, New Zealand decided to modify their open graded porous asphalt mixtures. Since the first field trial in 2007, more than 700.000 square meters in New Zealand have been paved with porous asphalt containing epoxy modified bitumen. In 2017, Delft University of Technology, province of Noord-Holland and Dura Vermeer started a joint fundamental research program to investigate the possibilities of epoxy modified bitumen in The Netherlands. During this program, extensive laboratory testing on various scales of epoxy modified bituminous materials (i.e., binder, mortar and mixture) has been performed using sophisticated testing tools. In addition, to explore the practical aspects of epoxy modification, Dura Vermeer formed a joint proof-of-concept program with six innovative municipalities to build and monitor trial pavement sections. Experiences are continuously exchanged between the two programs. This paper briefly describes the outcome of the laboratory research and focuses on the trial pavement sections. It reports on the implementation of epoxy modified bitumen from research to its introduction in The Netherlands.@en
