Visual inspection is one of the most common nondestructive evaluation techniques that is performed through vision. This chapter will summarize visual inspection principles for detecting impact damage in composite materials. Effective parameters and available standards for visual inspection of low-velocity impact damage are introduced, and the relevant challenges are discussed. Current developments in improving visual inspection, including the use of artificial intelligence algorithms, as well as smart coating layers for improved visibility of impact damage are reported. Recent case studies are included, and future research directions are discussed.

This paper introduces novel structural health monitoring (SHM) sensors to improve the detection of low energy impact damage in laminated composites. The sensor is a purposely designed thin-ply hybrid composite, composed of a layer of unidirectional S-glass/epoxy and another layer of unidirectional ultra-high modulus (UHM) carbon/epoxy. The sensor was incorporated onto both the impacted face and back of a substrate plate made from unidirectional T800 carbon/MTM49-3 epoxy prepregs with the stacking sequence of [45/0/90/-45]_4S. A series of drop tower tests were conducted on the composite plates with and without the attached hybrid sensing layer, with two different in-plane dimensions and varying energy levels ranging from 3 J to 124 J. The results indicate that the sensors functioned satisfactorily and provided direct correlations between visible and internal hidden damage detected by C-scan. The sensor can be optimized by selecting appropriate material properties and adjusting it to the in-plane dimensions of the substrate.

The aim of this study was to find the correlation between failure modes and acoustic emission (AE) events in a comprehensive range of thin-ply pseudo-ductile hybrid composite laminates when loaded under uniaxial tension. The investigated hybrid laminates were Unidirectional (UD), Quasi-Isotropic (QI) and open-hole QI configurations composed of S-glass and several thin carbon prepregs. The laminates exhibited stress-strain responses that follow the elastic-yielding-hardening pattern commonly observed in ductile metals. The laminates experienced different sizes of gradual failure modes of carbon ply fragmentation and dispersed delamination. To analyze the correlation between these failure modes and AE signals, a multivariable clustering method was employed using Gaussian mixture model. The clustering results and visual observations were used to determine two AE clusters, corresponding to fragmentation and delamination modes, with high amplitude, energy, and duration signals linked to fragmentation. In contrast to the common belief, there was no correlation between the high frequency signals and the carbon fibre fragmentation. The multivariable AE analysis was able to identify fibre fracture and delamination and their sequence. However, the quantitative assessment of these failure modes was influenced by the nature of failure that depends on various factors, such as stacking sequence, material properties, energy release rate, and geometry.@en

This paper investigates the fatigue behaviour of pseudo-ductile Quasi-Isotropic (QI) interlayer hybrids with un-notched and open-hole configurations. Two different types of QI pseudo-ductile hybrids were evaluated; HighC, with carbon to glass thickness ratio of 0.29, that is made of thin-ply M46JB-carbon/epoxy and thin-ply Xstrand-glass/epoxy prepregs, and LowC, with carbon to glass thickness ratio of 0.19, that is made of thin-ply T300-carbon/epoxy and standard-ply S-glass/epoxy prepregs. The hybrid configurations were loaded at 4 Hz in tension–tension fatigue without any initial damage and at different percentages of the pseudo-yield stress (σ_py) at which damage initiates. It was observed that there is no stiffness reduction, after 100,000 cycles, for a stress level of 80 % and 50 % of the σ_py for the un-notched and open-hole laminates, respectively. By increasing the stress level to 90 % and 70 % of the σ_py for the un-notched and open-hole laminates, respectively, there is a gradual stiffness reduction due to the appearance of matrix cracking and delamination in LowC, but no gradual reduction and no visible damage were observed for HighC. The final failure is more brittle and happens at a lower number of cycles for HighC compared with LowC. Different damage extents were observed for the investigated laminates before the final sudden failure due to variables such as the ply thickness, the cyclic energy release rate and the interfacial fracture toughness.

This paper presents a concise state-of-the-art review on the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) in bridge engineering. The paper is organized into commonly used FRP bridge components, and different materials/manufacturing techniques used for repairing and construction of FRP bridges. Efforts have been made to give a clear and concise view of FRP bridges using the most relevant literature. FRPs have certain desired properties like high strength to weight ratio, and high corrosion and fatigue resistance that make them a sustainable solution for bridges. However, as FRPs are brittle and susceptible to damage, when safety is concerned, critical parts of the bridges are made as hybrids of FRP and conventional materials. Despite significant studies, it has been found that a comprehensive effort is still required on better understanding the long term performance and end-of-life recycling, developing cost-effective and flexible manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, and developing green composites to take full advantages of FRPs.
