This thesis explores the future of Amsterdam and the broader metropolitan region, all deeply influenced by a rich history of water management practices. Against this backdrop, the rising challenges of climate change are increasingly threatening the Dutch delta region. Recognising the historical significance and heritage associated with Amsterdam’s water structures, this research aims to strengthen these assets to integrate a resilient water system with a strategy for sustainable heritage development in Amsterdam.
Qualitative and quantitative research have been combined to gain a better understanding of the water problems caused by climate change, enrich the understanding of contemporary cultural heritage values that are associated with the water system and look for spatial potential for urban transformation regarding water-related heritage. The integrated typology forms the basis for the design project, emphasising which design qualities can be improved in which places in the city.
In the design project, the maximisation method maximises the landscape and cultural resilience and by integrating these extremes it is intended to create the most sustainable urban plan. In parallel a pattern language will be developed that aims to generate design solutions that support the design qualities aimed for in this project.
The maximisation experiments and pattern language are combined into the integrated urban transformation plan and integrated implementation on the neighbourhood scale with two example neighbourhoods which show how different neighbourhood types can strengthen their water identity by integrating resilience water management with sustainable heritage development. Ultimately bridging past and future and creating a resilient urban environment.

This study examines how citizen engagement strategies can facilitate more inclusive participation for enhancing liveability in urban area development. With growing demands for citizen involvement in decision-making processes, particularly in light of the new Environment and Planning Act, developers often face challenges such as increased objections, unrealistic expectations, and potential delays. This study aims to bridge the gap between theoretical research on citizen participation and practical challenges of engagement in urban development. It examines two case studies: the Defensie-eiland project in Woerden and the Piekstraat development in Rotterdam. The Defensie-eiland project has already implemented citizen engagement strategies during its transformation from a former military site into a mixed-use neighbourhood. The Piekstraat project, on the other hand, is an ongoing development aiming to revitalize a historic dockland area. The research uses a mixed-methods approach, including exploratory interviews, documentation analysis, in-depth stakeholder interviews and a validating citizen survey. The findings aim to contribute to the academic discourse on sustainable urban development by highlighting the importance of citizen participation in shaping liveable and inclusive neighbourhoods. The thesis concludes with recommendations for practitioners on how to implement the proposed strategies effectively, highlighting the need for context-specific approaches, transparent communication, and the use of hybrid participation models. Digital tools show the capacity to engage traditionally underrepresented groups more effectively. The plan's success hinges on a team with strong commitment and a clear objective.

Golden Horn, the centrally located inlet of Bosphorus, Istanbul, used to occupy a substantial position for the industry and was perceived as a poor-quality area regarding the emergence of slum neighborhoods and the environmental pollution caused by industrialization. The 1980s marked a turning point with the deindustrialization process, where the urban regeneration of the Golden Horn waterfront was seen as a major opportunity for representing the globalizing Istanbul through culture-led attraction zones and privatization of industrial heritage facilities. Such an approach failed to establish a context with their broader urban environment and promoted gentrification and segregation and Istanbul’s identity evolved exclusively towards culture and its government to a profit-based agent of the private market through the adopted neoliberal economic policies. Rather than a structural economic change and organized urban renewal, the culture-led urban transformations through the heritage industry overshadowed the current urban urgencies such as urban poverty and limited the accessibility of the locals to heritage values.

In this direction, the research aim promotes a challenge on how the transformation of industrial heritage areas can extend beyond their cultural and historical values by (re)establishing a broader urban context while providing an emphasis on the shifting role of heritage management in urban transformation strategies. The integration with the broader urban context aims for a productive linkage with present-day values and place identity, and the anticipated urban transformation prioritizes the urgent needs of locals for socio-economic development. Through the analysis of the Golden Horn, the thesis emphasizes the transformation of the urban fabric in relation to the waterfront area, to understand the dynamics of the urban morphology and the place identity as delineated by (and with) post-industrial areas. Driven by the multi-layered study on Golden Horn, the main focus shifts toward neighborhood scale with the profound analysis and transformation of the Unkapanı Flour Mill in the Unkapanı district as an illustrative industrial heritage area characterized by urban poverty. Additionally, the analysis includes the Süleymaniye district and the world heritage site, exhibiting a multi-layered study of urban morphology, signifying an emphasis on existing problems and values, intensified through a distinctive narration with photos from the fieldwork. Furthermore, the anticipated productive transformation refers to a bottom-up approach, contextualized through components of urban integration, and design principles that are characterized by specific actions for Unkapanı’s transformation. In the end, the thesis finalizes with a brief conclusion by reflecting on the implementation of the design approach and the principles through their applicability and further developability for other industrial heritage areas along Golden Horn.

One in five municipalities in the Netherlands is prognosed to experience population decline by 2050. Especially rural settlements will have difficulty facilitating this shrinkage and the negative effects involved. With a depriving variety of available facilities and an increase in vacancy, local communities are on the border of falling apart. At the same time, an increasing number of churches are left vacated and out of service while religious participation declines. This graduation project aims to revitalize the heart of villages with the church at the center to increase the livability and social cohesion. Connecting the local community with the heritage of churches and their role in society again. With a toolbox filled with design interventions as a final product and the implementation of this toolbox on three different project locations throughout the Netherlands, this thesis provides a first step to a beckoning new perspective on the identity of rural cores.

Since the economic reform in 1978, Shanghai has experienced rapid growth and development. In the past three decades, Shanghai is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. Today, the Central Government had issued, "Shanghai will not expand itself," according to Shanghai Masterplan 2017-2035. So, China's urban development is facing a turning point, from low-quality expansion to focus on the quality of urban development and the efficient use of land. As the Shanghai Huangpu River becomes increasingly dense and will continue to develop, our urban designers must rethink the quality of the space created during the densification process. We need to consider how to make our urban environment more livable, promote a walking experience and a more active lifestyle. Therefore, the author hopes to use density as a starting point to explore the relationship between density and urban quality. The author focuses on three main concepts of quality: Mixed-use, Connectivity, and Identity. Furthermore, based on density typology to understand the riverfront urban environment and deliver quality from multi-scale design.

Nature is unique on earth. Civilizations over time have defined various landscapes, some of which have been changed and some are in the process. Sacredscapes are one among those that have sustained over many centuries. The urbanization is in the process of transforming this sacred identity of many cities. But what is forgotten is beyond religion, there is a strong socio-ecological balance that has kept this landscape resilient. Is there a need to preserve this identity? If so why and how? This graduation project explores the opportunities on the planning of sacredscapes, focusing on Varanasi in India. Following a cultural approach, the research proposes a regional design and strategic framework, which further shows transferability to other sacredscapes.

In the Netherlands there is a current tendency of areas with extreme growth as well as areas with extreme shrinkage. Because of the increasing population in cities like The Hague, social problems intensify. Among these problems is the issue of social-spatial inequality. This occurs when the distribution of life chances is dependent on the place where you live. When the differences between places have an unjust distribution of life chances as a consequence, it is called social- spatial inequality. The intention of this project is the development of a new approach, the Urban Biography, that makes it possible to get an elaborated understanding of the development of a public place, whilst using the physical, social and mental aspects of that place. This approach makes it possible to be able to read and understand the city, or a specific place at a higher level, in order to grasp the identity of this place. Especially important for this identity are the physical, social and mental aspects. Current research often lacks at least one of these aspects, which often results in a design that is only focused on the physical and not the human aspect. The basic idea is that studying these different parts will help with the understanding of the current situation of social-spatial inequality in growing cities. This deep understanding will create the opportunity to alter the public space in order to match both the historical characteristics and the challenges of the future, like the reduction of social-spatial inequality, in order to create a design for a more just future. This Urban Biography approach is applied to the case of the city of The Hague. This city has a strong distinction between rich and poor neighbourhoods. Considering the current differences between the neighbourhoods of the city, the neighbourhood, Statenkwartier is chosen to research in more detail. This neighbourhood is not necessarily the neighbourhood that comes first to mind when thought about social-spatial inequality, but is indeed a very interesting case. The elaborated study of the city as a whole and Statenkwartier in more detail, result in a redesign of the public space for Statenkwartier. The design will contribute to the reduction of socialspatial inequality in the city.

My project departs from the 2001 Operational Plan for the historic center of Genova. Under the trend of urban regeneration, the historic centre accumulates and generates many conflicts with the outgrowth of the city towards it fringes, which represents a complex and active boundary condition. Additionally, the degradation of industrial infrastructure also provides a turning point for the border between the port and the residential neighbourhood. By reclaiming the abandoned railway in the western gateway to the historic centre, my design strategy involves transforming the vacant land by reprogramming it for the immediate needs of the neighbourhoods. The project merges the spatial archaeology of urban hydrological infrastructure and its architectural implications with a series of public programs to act as public services on a new civic backbone. Hence, the project becomes a construct of site-bound reprogramming and civic speculation.
