This thesis examines the impact of the 2008 fire at TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture and the rapid transformation of the former “Red Chemistry” building into BK City. It investigates how student needs were addressed in this emergency project, despite spatial limitations and a 25% reduction in space. Using Stewart Brand’s Shearing Layers framework, the study compares three buildings—the original faculty at Oude Delft 39, the destroyed 1970 building, and BK City—focusing on site, skin, and space plan. By analyzing their architectural performance in terms of accessibility, spatial quality, and aesthetics, the research evaluates whether BK City adequately responds to a growing student population and how it performs relative to its predecessors.
