Abstract

The sonar performance indicator (SPI) will be an integral part of the modernised command and control system of the RNIN Alkmaar class minehunters. The SPI will act as a tactical decision aid, supporting both the detection sonar operator as well as the commanding officer, for the hull mounted sonar (HMS) as well as the propelled variable depth sonar (P-VDS). The SPI uses data from environmental sensors, the sonar array and ship's instruments to calculate single minehunting performance (athwart probability of detection and NATO planning parameters); combined performance (for operations with HMS and P-VDS against the same threat); a sonar contrast map (to guide the sonar operator's visual scan). Based on the performance, several mathematical optimisations can be performed, most notably optimal tilt angle (for either the HMS or P-VD S); optimal depth (for the P-VDS) and optimal speed (based on the minimum operation duration).
