Abstract

Integrated applications based on Earth-observation, telecommunication and navigation capabilities, both from Space and from terrestrial and in-door assets, will call for smaller satellite systems providing higher revisit times. This trend will only materialize in case instrument and satellite platform technology can keep up. Amongst others, micro-thrusters and miniaturized star-trackers and sun-sensors are enabling technologies with respect to the necessary satellite platform technologies. Nano- and microphotonic devices could potentially revolutionize space instrumentation once the challenge of coupling light into wave-guides on chips has been met and overcome.
