(mentor) Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Department Telecommunicatie- en Verkeersbegeleidingssystemen Date 1997-01-24 Abstract A. construction method for codes correcting multiple localized burst errors with variable rate is proposed. The rate of a code is the ratio of the number of message symbols to the total number of symbols sent. The codes obtained by this construction method have code rate that varies with the total number of localized errors corrected. This ability to correct different numbers of localized errors and to take advantage in code rate when the number of localized errors is small will improve upon the known codes in reliability and flexibility. This method also keeps the encoding and the decoding complexity low. The basic construction of this variable rate method is a new fixed rate method that is designed for multiple localized burst errors correction. Codes obtained by this new fixed rate method improve upon the best known codes in the sense that they can correct bursts of large length and give a high code rate while keeping the encoding and decoding complexity low.
