When monitoring persons boarding and disembarking a vessel during maintenance, it is important to have a reliable and flawless monitoring system in place. The current system relies on human action, making it unpredictable and time consuming. The goal of this thesis is to design a prototype of a detection system based on wireless, non-intrusive detection and categorization of people, which communicates to a central node where it gives the safety officer of a ship a direct overview of who is on board the vessel at all times. The solution covered in this thesis is based on an ultra-high frequency radio identification system. The antennas of the system are positioned over the gangways connecting the vessel to the mainland and the tags are positioned inside the helmets. This ensures a non-intrusive way of detection and requires no action.
