Abstract
This paper provides a review of developments in artificial, metal and ceramic matrix composites with potential for high temperature applications such as in the hot sections of gas turbine engines. Emphasis is placed on developments which have occured since 1975. An attempt is made to assess the current level of activity and to identify outstanding problems and research directions for the future. To provide a basis for these discussions, the status prior to 1975 is also briefly reviewed.
