Abstract
Following the baseline philosophy for the fluid physics instrumentation study, outlined in Part 1, a detailed design is presented for a proposed optical diagnostics instrument (PODI) for use in microgravity. The basis for this design was laid in a number of exploratory experiments, of which a short overview is presented also. A number of components to be used in a breadboard system for PODI are identified and performance predectionsfor this system are assessed. A check on these predictions will be presented in Part 3. Part 4, Executive Summary contains the major conclusions and recommendations from the FPIS.
