Abstract

The compounding method enables stress intensity factors to be evaluated for complex geometrical configurations using the known results of simpIer ancillary configurations. Implementation of the method on a computer system requires that a data file of known results be available, and that a program be written to compound solutions from that data file. Firstly, a procedure is described to convert availablegraphical data on stress intensity factors to numerical data and store it in a direct access computer file together with identification parameters. Secondly a computer program is described which uses the data in that file to compound stress intensity factors for other configurations. It is shown that the errors in the results from this program are within acceptable engineering tolerances.
