Abstract

This study deals with fracture mechanics aspects of mode 1 crack growth under montonically increasing (quasi-static) loads. Using the finite element method stable crack growth and the plastic deformation fields associated with this process are analyzed. A two parameter approach is proposed for a description of initiation and subsequent stable growth of the crack. Critical values of both parameters are determined for 2024T3 aluminium sheet material. The growth criterion was incorporated in an existing Finite Element computer program and used to predict crack growth in a centrally cracked sheet specimen. For an evaluation of the applicability to a more general problem the model was also applied in an analysis of the crack growth behaviour of a stiffened sheet specimen. Both results were compared with data obtained experimentally. The agreement is good.
