Abstract

The Coastal Dynamics conference series advances the community's understanding of coastal processes, in terms of science, engineering and management, spanning a variety of scales and environments including sandy, rocky and muddy coasts, inlets and estuaries. The Coastal Dynamics 2021 conference was the nineth conference in the series hosted by Delft University of Technology in close collaboration with its partners of the Netherlands Centre for Coastal Research (NCK), Deltares and Rijkswaterstaat. In view of the rapid demographic and climate changes the theme of the conference was titled Shaping the Future of our Coasts. This theme was reflected by four excellent keynote presentations by Dr. Giovanni Coco from the University of Auckland, Dr. Jennifer Irish from Virginia Tech, Ir. Annemieke Nijhof from Deltares and Dr. Nadia Senechal from Bordeaux University. Given the COVID restrictions at the time of the conference the conference format was changed from an initially onsite conference to predominantly online. This switch would have been impossible without the support of the team of Event Solutions to help organize the conference, of dedicated student assistants to run the daily operations, of TUDelft administrative staff, and of student volunteers who operated as session organizers and technicians as well as session moderators. More than 300 people attended the conference either online or onsite or both. Approximately 270 abstracts were submitted prior to the conference which were critically reviewed by our extensive list of reviewers, for which we thank them. This resulted in 147 oral presentations and 99 poster presentations during the conference. As part of the conference there was also a special one-day session about the Sand Motor, a large-scale nourishment on the Delfland coast in the Netherlands. During the conference the results of 10 years of research into the Sand Motor thereby connecting nature, science and society were presented in a hybrid fashion where people could attend either online or on site. Both oral and poster presenters were given the option to publish their work in the online conference proceedings resulting in the list of papers below.
