Abstract

Various types of rotating drag devices are described and their properties and ranges of application are indicated. The effectiveness of rotating parachutes, as compared with conventional parachutes and with other autorotating devices, is discussed. Fabric rotating parachutes obtain considerable increase in drag per unit cloth area, mainly owing to the increase in diameter due to centrifugal force. They are not efficient autorotation devices as compared with rigid rotors. Some saving in weight and bulk as compared with conventional parachutes may be possible in individual applications, and for certain loads reduced time of fall and hence improved accuracy of placing is possible.
