Abstract

Complementing an earlier study on constant-sectien turbine rings, stress data are presented for variable- section turbine ring segments Buitable for carrying tbe turbine rotor blades in a tip-driven turbofan. These pinned-end segments have a constant outer radius and a variabie radial depth in order to achieve a desirable flexibility. Very efficient turbine segments can be built using I or box sections, provided thermal expansion effects are not permitted to become excessive. by controlling the maximum temperature and/or selecting materials with low expansion coefficients. In general, considerable variations can be made in the geometry of the segment without producing serious changes in the calculated stresses.
