Abstract

The present state of development of the telecommunication infrastructure is characterized by several features, namely the increasing digitization of the telephone network, the rapid growth of the demand for data communication, a growing diversity and specialization of the telecommunication services and consequently the increasing cost of gateways between networks. The convergence of these features gave rise to the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) concept, being a fully digital network, evolving from the partial digitized telephone network, onto which all telecommunication services can be integrated. The ISDN concept has been standardized over the last years under aegis of the Comité Consultatif International de Télégrafique et Téléphonique (CCITT). All the leading network carriers are working towards ISDN implementation.
