Abstract
Sandwich panels provided with a central saw cut in one face layer were fatigue tested to study crack growth up to a predetermined length. Static residual strength was determined subsequently. Crack growth rates and residual strength are compared with similar data for face sheet material. An increased resistance against both stable fatigue crack growth and unstable crack extension at the failure load is observed that is two to three times larger than predicted by linear fracture mechanics methods. However, the residual strength of such panels may be less than 2/3 of basic panel strength for crack aspect ratios of .05 only. The present results suggest the application of crack stoppers to the face sheets.
