Severe flood events in China are a common cause of life losses. Many efforts have been carried out by the Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) to understand flood development and impact on the Yellow River. Modeling approaches based on discretization of the modeled domain in square and rectangular grids have great importance in the management of rivers, but they usually present two drawbacks: the required accuracy of the meandering of wide long rivers is not well represented, and the need to use many grid cells reduces computational speed. Modeling and simulation of extreme flood events using unstructured grids has not yet been applied to the Yellow River. This study shows how such a method can be beneficial to decision makers in the Yellow River region in case of flood events. The research shows that a flexible mesh discretization of the domain can overcome the two drawbacks. Along with a test of the proposed modeling method, new characteristics of the spatial evolution of flood events in the Yellow River emerged and are presented, showing the capabilities of DFloridaOW-FM software in modeling such a complex system.@en

Developing easy-to-use software that combines components for simultaneous visualization, simulation and interaction is a great challenge. Mainly, because it involves a number of disciplines, like computational fluid dynamics, computer graphics, high-performance computing. One of the main characteristics of an interactive model is that it should provide immediate feedback to the user, for example respond to changes in model state or view settings. Features involving interaction during simulation are usually available for models with a relatively small number of computational cells and are used mainly for demonstration and educational purposes. The reason for that is that the time required to compute a single time step and render model results become significant when comparing to a simple model. It would be useful if interactive modeling would also work for models typically used in consultancy projects involving large scale simulations. This results in a number of technical challenges related to the combination of the model itself and the visualization tools (scalability, implementation of an appropriate API for control and access to the internal state). While model parallelization is increasingly addressed by the environmental modeling community, little effort has been spent on developing a highperformance interactive environment. What can we learn from the other domains where visualizations plays crucial role, such as 3D animation, gaming, virtual globes (Autodesk 3ds Max, Google Earth) that also focus on efficient interaction with 3D environments? In these domains high efficiency is usually achieved by the use of computer graphics algorithms such as surface simplification depending on current view, distance to objects, and efficient caching of the aggregated representation of object meshes. We investigate how these algorithms can be re-used in the context of interactive hydrodynamic modeling without significant changes to the model code and allowing model operation on both multi-core CPU personal computers and high-performance computer clusters. @en

A few years ago Deltares started a large multidisciplinary project named Next Generation Hydro Software. The main focus of the project is to improve, harmonize and integrate existing hydro software that has been developed throughout the years. Important technological innovations include development of the new computational core D-Flow Flexible Mesh, as well as the user-friendly, open modelling environment Delta Shell. The project involves more than 40 scientists and software engineers. The new integrated system will allow both water managers and modelers to do their work better and faster. The unique characteristic of the project is that it focuses on the possibility of setting up integrated models of the whole aquatic chain from the source to the sea, resulting in complex model configurations. The challenges further increase because of the involvement of experts from many different fields within the aforementioned aquatic chain. Furthermore, the project addresses the complete workflow of a modeler, including model setup, calibration and validation. For this purpose the system includes new scientific visualization, analysis and interactive modeling tools that enable users to improve their understanding of the modelled processes. Applications of the system show the successful integration of 0D (lumped hydrological models and real-time control rules), 1D (river flow and water quality models) and 2D/3D model components (river, estuary and coastal areas).
