The molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxy populations exhibits diverse physical properties. We investigate the CO excitation of 12 dusty luminous star-forming galaxies at 2-4 by combining observations of the CO from to. The spectral line energy distribution (SLED) has a similar shape to NGC 253, M82, and local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, with much stronger excitation than the Milky Way inner disc. By combining with resolved dust continuum sizes from high-resolution 870 m ALMA observations and dust mass measurements determined from multiwavelength spectral energy distribution fitting, we measure the relationship between the CO SLED and probable physical drivers of excitation: star-formation efficiency, the average intensity of the radiation field, and the star-formation rate surface density. The primary driver of high-CO excitation in star-forming galaxies is star-formation rate surface density. We use the ratio of the CO(3-2) and CO(6-5) line fluxes to infer the CO excitation in each source and find that the average ratios for our sample are elevated compared to observations of low-redshift, less actively star-forming galaxies and agree well with predictions from numerical models that relate the ISM excitation to the star-formation rate surface density. The significant scatter in the line ratios of a factor within our sample likely reflects intrinsic variations in the ISM properties that may be caused by other effects on the excitation of the molecular gas, such as cosmic ray ionization rates and mechanical heating through turbulence dissipation.

Characterization of wide-field optics in the Terahertz regime imposes new and demanding requirements for testing systems. Basic optical parameters can be determined from scalar planar characterization, obtained using monochromatic or thermal sources located in the instrument focal plane. In contrast, important features, such as the spillover efficiency, wave front error, or aperture efficiency cannot be easily measured by such approaches. Moreover, when instruments have a curved focal plane, designed to match the hosting telescope, even basic parameters are difficult to extract from scalar planar measurements. In such cases, the use of phase and amplitude information is mandatory. From a complex planar measurement, the complete information of the optical system can be obtained, allowing the estimation of all relevant optical parameters. In this work, we present and demonstrate experimentally a technique to perform such measurement based on the use of continuous wave photonic terahertz sources. Here, we present our results at 350 GHz and 850 GHz, demonstrating the feasibility of performing measurements at different submillimeter frequencies using a single experimental setup. The proposed system was implemented to fully characterize a wide-field submillimeter camera based on kinetic inductance detectors designed to be deployed at the APEX Telescope in Chile.

We report the detection of a massive neutral gas outflow in the z = 2.09 gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxy HATLAS J085358.9+015537 (G09v1.40), seen in absorption with the OH+(11-10) transition using spatially resolved (0"5 × 0"4) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. The blueshifted OH+ line is observed simultaneously with the CO(9-8) emission line and underlying dust continuum. These data are complemented by high-angular-resolution (0"17 × 0"13) ALMA observations of CH+(1-0) and underlying dust continuum, and Keck 2.2 μm imaging tracing the stellar emission. The neutral outflow, dust, dense molecular gas, and stars all show spatial offsets from each other. The total atomic gas mass of the observed outflow is 6.7 × 109M⊙, >25% as massive as the gas mass of the galaxy. We find that a conical outflow geometry best describes the OH+ kinematics and morphology and derive deprojected outflow properties as functions of possible inclination (0°.38-64°). The neutral gas mass outflow rate is between 83 and 25,400 M⊙ yr-1, exceeding the star formation rate (788 ± 300M⊙ yr-1) if the inclination is >3°.6 (mass-loading factor = 0.3-4.7). Kinetic energy and momentum fluxes span (4.4-290) × 109 L⊙ and (0.1-3.7) × 1037 dyne, respectively (energy-loading factor = 0.013-16), indicating that the feedback mechanisms required to drive the outflow depend on the inclination assumed. We derive a gas depletion time between 29 and 1 Myr, but find that the neutral outflow is likely to remain bound to the galaxy unless the inclination is small and may be reaccreted if additional feedback processes do not occur.
