Abstract

WeGrowCo, reintroduced the open-building ideology of John Habraken and Frans van der Werf within the organic design proces of a new neighborhood at Strandeiland, Ijburg. WeGrowCo proves that open-building has a large potential to grow, make and build adaptable and self-sufficient neighborhoods together with inhabitants. Before buildings are designed, emphasis is led on the creation of a local biobased production line, including hemp fields and facilities, for the production of hempcrete. The facilities will eventually grow/evolve into entrance courtyards while the hemp fields naturally fertilizes the unfertile ground of Strandeiland. This creates the possibility for inhabitants to choose between different green courtyards with different types of in-between spaces. The social and ecological potential of this in-between space is further explored in the research paper.
