Abstract

In the Telecommunications and Traffic Control Systems Group in the department of Electrical Engineering of Delft University of Technology the Telegraphics system has been developed. With this system messages containing graphics can be transmitted over a communication network. Graphics for such a message are made by using a writing tablet. It is possible to mix text with graphics. These messages can be sent over a communication network, in which connected terminals haven the same resolution. It is possible to transmit telegraphics documents using a Message Handling System, which is made according to the CCITT standard X.400. To make it possible to transmit documents between systems, that use terminals with different resolutions, it is necessary to contain the resolution of the sender in the document. Many systems, that are capable of transmitting multimedia documents, use a logical structuring for the documents. This is done to be independent of the presentation device. To structure Telegraphies documents the standard Office Document Architecture (ODA) of the ECMA, ISO and CCITT can be applied. Using this standard, documents can be coded with the rules of ASN 1, which is the same as the coding of X.400.
