Abstract

This graduate thesis examines the implications of participation in urban development of Rotterdam today and how this is different from the early ‘90s. Literature research about the nuances in participation in urban planning forms the framework for this thesis. Using this base, I compare the cases of Rijnhaven redevelopment, going on right now, and development of Kop van Zuid 30 years ago. I research these cases through publicly available citizen participation reports, direct contact with the municipality and my own experience living in Rotterdam Zuid. This research shows that participation in Rotterdam has become a buzz word. Terminology and documentation surrounding the participation process has become a more public and outspoken part of the design process, but this has not led to a significant change in the base principles and power of citizen participation in urban planning.
