Abstract
The industrial development after the destruction of the Second World War in Silesia region was not only an enormous achievement in reconstruction; it also caused massive environmental damage. Moreover, as a result of the political upheaval in central and Eastern Europe, the region’s heavy industry was no longer competitive. Between 1998 and 2001 alone about 300,000 jobs in heavy industry were lost. Job reduction results in a gradual loss in population. The older industrial areas and their affiliated housing estates are viewed today as the complicated regional heritage. The main objective of my project was to improve the economic, social, and environmental conditions in the chosen area in regards to the industrial heritage and contemporary strengths and weaknesses of the region.
