Abstract

The unsteady pressures associated with the flow of air over a large cavity, such as a bomb bay, may excite the normal vibrational modes of the aeroplane. The magnitude of the vibration will depend on both the exciting loads due to the unsteady pressures, and on the characteristios of the normal vibrational modes. This paper examines the unsteady pressure fields in and around cavities in subsonic and transonic flow by reference to wind tunnel tests, and discusses how the vibrational response of an aeroplane to the resulting unsteady loads may be estimated.
