Abstract

The intention of this study was to give insight into landscape architects’ changed position and scope of work in the Netherlands since the introduction of landscape architecture at TU Delft by giving a voice to the landscape architecture educators themselves. . This argument puts the landscape architectural educators to the forefront and therefore presents a new perspective in the growing disciplinary discourse. Oral history and published speeches by Saskia de Wit, Steffen Nijhuis, Jan Bijhouwer, Frans Maas, Clemens Steenbergen and Dirk Sijmons were used and reflected on. Due to their drive to put landscape architecture on the radar, the position of the landscape architect in the Netherlands has evolved from garden designer to academically educated professional influencing national policies regarding spatial development.
