Abstract

A survey was carried out to identify the strategies for tunnel fire safety used in different countries, with a focus on the combination of life safety and asset management for existing structures. This paper brings together the data that is gathered from contacting tunnel fire safety experts and asset owners in various countries. Contributions from Belgium, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland and the United Arab Emirates have been collected. The responses have been analyzed, similarities between the different countries were noted down, and the particularities of each country have been briefly summarized. The answers indicate that the structural assessment of existing tunnels subjected to fire loading is not much addressed, and that the use of nonlinear finite element modelling for this question is not used in other countries, indicating the novelty of the tunnel fire safety management strategies developed in the Netherlands.
