Abstract

The use of adapted kitchens has been investigated by means of a survey of 108 disabled users in the Netherlands. Some well known problems concerning working in a sitting position were confirmed in this study. A suitable counter installed for the sitting person is not very comfortable for the other users of the kitchen. The sitting position requires space underneath the counter for the legs, which is not always available. Cupboards are not easy to reach. Some recommendations are included to prevent the problems mentioned above. Counter and cooker should have sufficient space underneath for the legs. The kitchen should have a low part for people working sitting down as well as a part at normal height for people working standing up. Storage space should be installed within the range of the sitting person.
