Abstract

Changes in coronary perfusion pressure affect coronary arterial resistance (autoregulation) as well as myocardial oxygen consumption (Gregg's phenomenon). The interaction between the effects of perfusion pressure and myocardial oxygen consumption on coronary flow control was investigated using a model. This model analysis predicts that autoregulation and Gregg's phenomenon compete with each other in controlling coronary flow. The negative feedback system of the metabolic control system can become a positive feedback system when the level of arterial tone decreases and Gregg's phenomenon becomes more important.
