Abstract

In this paper, a new method for UWB channel characterization is introduced. This method is based on the knowledge of the frequency response of several (but not all) randomly selected portions (chunks) of the UWB band. Employing this method, estimation of the root mean square (rms) delay spread (RDS) is investigated. The results for different scenarios are compared to the casewhen the complete UWB channel is known. Wideband indoor channel measurement data at 2.4, 4.75 and 11.5 GHz of [1], which fulfils the UWB criteria, is evaluated using the introduced method. The results show that the RDS of the UWB channel can be estimated when the frequency response of the UWB channel is only partially known.
