Abstract

In the conceptual design phase, OEMs perform technology assessment to identify feasible solutions for their new aircraft. When the OEM is unable to assess a certain technology themselves, they consult Tier-1 suppliers to involve
them in the design process. The suppliers have higher fidelity analysis tools that can help the OEM with their assessment, but the characteristics of such tools (e.g. high detail of input, computational time to execute) prevent an in-depth exploration of the design space. This thesis proposes a framework that enables a closer collaboration between the OEM and their supplier. The collaboration is streamlined through a web-based collaborative environment. Front-loading principles are applied to capitalise on existing data, reducing the efforts required by the supplier to service the OEM. The framework was successfully applied to an internally developed test case, and a use case within the ongoing collaborative research project DEFAINE, concerning the design of an aileron.
