Institution National Aerospace Laboratory NLR Date 1976-10-07 Abstract The proposed experiments are intended to provide basic and engineering information about liquid-solid body interaction, forced liquid motion and free surface behaviour, all in a 0-g environment. Three series of complementary experiments are defined which should yield qualitative information about liquid—solid dynamics phenomena. The first series is meant to study the motions of a partially filled liquid container. These motions are started from well—defined initial conditions and recorded on film. Markings on the container allow post-flight reconstruction of attitude and trajectory of the container. Several different containers are contemplated. The second series concerns the study of the liquid motion inside a transparent container which is forced into a well—defined motion. The liquid motion is filmed. Several different container shapes are to be used. In the third series, the motions of the free liquid surface are to be related to the solid body motions of the container. Therefore a small container is to be enclosed in a liquid globule and allowed to float free after a well—defined excitation. In addition twomain experiments are defined. These experiments are executed with one container, an annular cylinder, that is instrumented for fluid pressure measurements. Main experiment A provides data on the forced liquid motions inside the container. Main experiment B provides data on the free motions of the liquid and the container after a well defined initial excitation. In addition to the experimental results, information about the performance of the proposed new fluid pressure measurement system will result. This measurement system should be of general applicability to zero—g flow experimentation.
