Institution National Research Council Canada, National Aeronautical Establishment, Strcutures and Materials Section Date 1967-03-31 Abstract Profiles of three semi-prepared grass landing strips and four snowdrift-covered lakes have been measured and are analyzed by standard statistical methods. Autocorrelation functions show that the profiles are truely random when long wavelength trends are removed by a specially developed filter, and probability density calculations indicate that the roughness distributions are essentially Gaussian in nature. Tbe power spectra found are all similar in shape and tbe snowdrift-covered lakes are three te four times rougher than the grass strips. A method of estimating aliasing errors due to discrete sampling is presented. Idealized spectral curves have been fitted to tbe two types of surfaces.
