Improvement of the superposition of geographical data in KOSMOSS

Since mid 1982, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute KNMI has to its possession a ground station (KOSMOSS), which receives and processes high resolution imagery, acquired from Tiros-N type weather satellites. To determine the weather positions in the images, the ground station is equipped with the capability to superpose, in real time, geographical data (e.g. coast contour lines) to the weather images. The applied superposition shows some imperfections: -the position deviation of the superposed geographical data is visible and disturbing, and -the superposed coast contour lines are too coarse. This report describes the results of an investigation to remove that imperfections through the application of more accurate orbital data, and more detailed coast contour lines. Further, thanges in the KOSMOSS software are proposed, of thiwh it is expected that they yield a substantial superposition improvement without decreasing the image production capacity of the KOSMOSS ground station.
